Ok, folks: here's the lowdown. Egberto Gismonti is a genius. Like, genius. One of the most prolific composers and musicians in Brazil, Gismonti is a multi-instrumentalist with countless ECM records to his name. Sebastián and I had the privilege of presenting his NY solo debut - say that one more time - at Symphony Space to an audience of over 600. The box office was flooded with requests for tickets, and I got to see the whole thing from the back of the house. Charlie Haden, his longtime trio collaborator, had just died and for an encore, he brought a single piece of sheet music to the piano and presented a new solo piece. I just about dropped dead. He played for 2 hours, no intermission, and greeted fans backstage for another hour.
SF Jazz even presented a series of concerts last fall; pity I missed it, but bully for him that he got a weekend in before the pandemic! Check out his ECM profile and please god, listen to him on every possible streaming service this weekend.
